My G3 266DT has a double ended cable on the CD and a single ended cable on

Yes, you probably have a late /266, and these were indeed provided with
two-headed Bus 1 cables, with the CD-ROM being assigned Bus 1, Master, and
the (optional) Zip being assigned Bus 1, Slave.

However, all versions and speeds of Beige G3s were provided with a
single-headed Bus 0 cable.

Are these cables interchangeable between the buses?

Yes ... and no.

Yes, the cables can be physically interchanged.

But, no, the lengths are wrong for supporting a Slave drive on Bus 0.

Special Bus 0 Master/Slave cables for Beige G3 DTs and MTs are sold on eBay
under the description "Beige G3 Master/Slave Hard Drive Upgrade".

I think I read somewhere that the ATA bus 0 is the faster of the two ...
>>

Not true.

On the Beige G3, both Bus 0 and Bus 1 are EIDE (16.67 MB/sec).

However, on the B&W G3, Bus 0 is UATA/33 (33 MB/sec) and on the G4, Bus 0 is
UATA/66 (66 MB/sec). Bus 1 of both the B&W G3 and the G4 is EIDE (16.67
MB/sec).

... and if I were to install a HDD on ATA bus 1, I should make the CD the
slave, as the CD should be set to master only if it's the only drive on a
bus. Am I correct
on this also?
>>

In general, fast devices, such as hard drives, should be on Bus 0, and slow
devices, such as demountables, should be on Bus 1.

On some Beige machines, the CD-ROM will only function correctly as Master,
and the Zip will only function correctly as Slave. The later machines (say,
1998) corrected this defect.

I have another smaller HDD I want to install to use for storage of things I
need from time to time and can't remember where the CD's are. (My wife says
I'm getting old. hehe) If these cables will interchange, it'll save me
haveing to buy another cable right now.

Obtaining the correct, special Bus 0 cable will ensure that you will
accomplish your goal.
