exactly what model number is it?  are you sure it's a mac card and not a
pc card?  if properly done (which apparently no one does) a card should
work in either, but in reality they usually only work in one or the
other, and the atto cards supposedly can't be flashed to behave like the
same card for the other system type.  also, many of the scsi cards won't
let you boot, definitely a bug but that's how it is.  i assume you've
checked termination etc.?  given that it interferes with ide bootup i'd
suspect that it's a pc card or simply not compatible with os 9 or x. 
the atto site is pretty good about admitting to which cards have these
limitations, and they are very upfront about there' plans to provide
updates or not to provide updates for the older cards.
