If your monitor makes crackling sounds and momentarily blacks 
out/resizes then you may have serious problems. There was a considerable 
level of discussion and complaint about this relating to BW and Graphite 
17 Studio Displays over the last two years. I wont go into the detail 
here as this may not be your problem but I do have some background if 
you care to contact me off list. In the meantime see Apple Knowedge Base 
article 88195.
