Rebuild the Desktop File.
At bootup, after "the parade", and exactly at the point where the
Desktop goes blank, just before the icons reappear, hold down the
Option+Command keys. You will get a prompt asking "Are you sure you want
to rebuild the desktop on xxx...?" Click OK. Desktop will rebuild, and
you should get your Icons back. Might solve the other problem[s] as well.
