You mention your Apple Menu Options preferences. I work on other people's
computers, and I find that the source of most all lockups in Classic
pertains to the Apple Menu Options and Finder prefs, mainly the Apple Menu
Options. What I would recommend it to write an AppleScript that throws away
the Apple Menu Options prefs on startup.

And, yes, make sure you rebuild your desktop as well as Stewart suggested.
