Answers to your questions. (I hope) I am fairly new to raid setups.

1.  I am using OS 10.1.4 and 9.2.2 installed on the 80gig raid disk and 
boot into either one from the raid volume.  I also keep 9.2.2 on my 
original 6 gig for backup. I am using raid 0 just for performance(more 
speed).

2. I have read that the idea behind the raid pci card(hardware) is to 
eliminate the need for raid software. The card has two dip switches that 
you set for either normal operations (no raid) or the raid setup. Your 
processor supposedly is then not bogged down with raid software work and 
can focus on other tasks.  XLR8 your  mac did a review on this and liked 
the raid hardware systems over raid software.  XLR8 your mac has 
excellent articles and linking on raid setups for macs.
