Hi, After considerable experience with exactly this HP printer connected to a variety of Macs (Performa 640, Performa 5200. WGS 8150, beige G3, iMac per KeySpan), I can safely state that is IS a driver problem. Regardless of which machine (except the Performas under 7.6 or 8), the driver corrupts in a manner of weeks, sometimes days, and there is nothing left to do but to reinstall. The last serial drivers form HP are touchy. In you special case, the USB-serial adapter is is probably not properly emulating the printer port. I don't know the one you have;on the keyspan, you can select which port is which and what it is supposed to spoof. Under 8.6 -9.2.2, this works just fine with the Keyspan. Such USB to serial are usually coded to spoof both the printer and the modem port, and when numbered the printer port will be port no.1 I imagine you have already tried that if the device has two ports. Chooser sees the ppd in the systemfolder, not the printer for serial printers. Only in the case of USB is the printer itself detected. As for the previous mail about buying in general, Any of the big three are good, but Canon and Epson work best with Macs. From an economy viewpoint, Canons with individual tanks are the best bet. And from the same viewpoint, ANY bottom of the line printer from any maker is money thrown out.
