first of all, yes, western digital drives resemble something you might accidentally step in in terms of quality, i've never heard of anyone who would buy another. second, did you set one drive to be master and one to be slave? if not that's the problem, which it sounds like it might be. in any case, your coworker should check the jumper settings on both drives, and make sure the cables are in firmly as usual. you should definitely NOT buy one of those drives unless you desperately need an expensive door stop. try ibm, or quantum (not maxtor, even though they own quantum now, i've got one of each and the quantum is faster with the same spindle speed etc.) also avoid seagate, fujitsu seems to be ok as well.
