Just thought I'd add my bit to this topic. From what I've seen working in a university IT dept, nearly every hard drive manufacturer has been churning out poor hard drives lately. We've had loads of machines in recently, many new, with hard drive failures. The drive brands that have been failing are Maxtor, Fujitsu, IBM, Quantums. It seems to me that hard drive manufactures are not making their drives as well as they used too, i.e. cutting costs during the manufacturing process, with us consumers getting screwed at the other end. Personally I have 2 IBM's in my Mac. Ones a 41.1gb 5400rpm Deskstar (about 1.5 yrs old), which replaced the original 4gb and a 9.1gb 7400rpm scsi drive (nearly 3 yrs old, formerly in a server). Now this one has had to go to IBM in Holland for repairs as I accidently dropped it on the work top (yep stupid me!). After that the needle started sticking and the drive grinding... not good. I ran IBM's hard drive fitness test on it and it said it had some bad sectors at the end of the drive, so it seems it was on its way out anyway... I just gave it a little push! ;) Other than that I've been happy with my IBM drives.
I think really with hard drives, its the luck of the draw if you get a duff one.
