I can't say anything about purported misinformation campaigns.

I *have* actually had to reformat HDs on Mac OS computers because of
misbehaving software coupled with crashes. This hasn't happened often but it
has happened (probably once every two years).

The difference that I've noticed over the years b/t Mac OS and Winblows is
that when a Mac goes down files are recoverable 98% of the time (& 85% of
the time (probably) the OS can keep chugging away with a minor tweek or
simply a re-install of the OS overtop the misbehaving one (a painless
procedure on a Mac)).

On Winblows, when it goes down, IT GOES DOWN. In my experience I'd say files
are unrecoverable, 20% of the time, and the OS 50-75% of the time. And, when
you have to re-install Winblows, you have to re-install EVERY LAST
application that you ever installed (unlike Mac where you simply re-install
the OS and save your Preferences folder and you're off to the races (most of
the time)).

Eric.

PS In 18 years of Mac use I have *never* lost a whole floppy disk or HD.
I've lost individual files before due to corrupt floppies, due to
misbehaving apps or OS on an HD, and I once had my HD go south on me (but, I
was able to retrieve 100% of my user data off the drive... it was terminal
but could still be mounted... (and, while trying to revive the HD for use it
suffered a real, physical crash (noises I'd never heard before came from the
drive :(.
