About 12 years ago, after spending a lot of money on a high-end Windows computer with lots of peripherals, I got so fed up with all the problems in getting any of the peripherals to work that I eventually (after about a year) ditched the whole lot and joined the Mac brigade. I have never looked back since. Plug and Play was never a workable feature of Windows but was always completely integrated into the Mac platform. Things might have changed slightly now but I have absolutely no desire to go back to a Windows environment.
For commercial compatibility reasons I only have MS Office and IE 5.0.1 on my Mac but would get rid of them in a flash if I could find comparable apps which could be read by most of the people I interact with. I am trying to get rid of IE at the moment and am using Navigator (a free Mozilla browser) but this is an ongoing project and still has a lot of bugs and therefore have to revert to IE to get into some sites. As far as Office is concerned and while it currently serves the purpose, I, again, would ditch it poste haste if I could find someting comparable. Maybe Acrobat .pdf is the way to go since both platforms can read this format but it requires telling the recipients that they have to have Acrobat Reader on their macgines to be able to read it. So far, educating my principals and contacts (the majority are Windows users - perhaps this is the reason why) in this regard have proved futile. I believe and hope that, with the way MS is trying to lock all users into their proprietary system will eventually force most companies to the Linux (free) or Mac OS X platforms as these at least allow the user to control their own destiny. The sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Apologies for the long post but sometimes my frustration gets the better of me.
