I had zero difficulty with both a "real" NE2000 and a D-Link NE2K Clone
using a switch. The negotiations were seamless and perfect.

I don't see why ANYONE should use hubs anymore. Switched bandwidth is way
better than collision domains. Luckily most broadband routers/firewalls
have built-in switches. So you can get your protection against 'l33t hax0rz
and your switched bandwidth at the same time. If you can still find an SMC
Barricade ABR 7004 you don't even need a broadband connection...it will
work with an external analog modem.

If you simply can't or won't get a router, standalone switches (switched
hubs) are available for the same or less cost than an old-school hub. I
have had great luck with my Addtron and the aforementioned SMC Barricade,
but there are other good, inexpensive switches out there.

Take care,
