I had heat problems when I upgraded my Beige DT G3/266 to an XLR8 G4/450
OC'd to 500 MHz using the Apple gasket plus thermal paste supplied by XLR8.
In the end I removed the gasket (carefully!) with a razor blade and used a
high-quality silver-containing thermal paste from Radio Shack instead. I
spread a thin coat on the top of the CPU using a razor blade to get an even
layer. Reinstalled the heat sink, buttoned up the case to ensure proper
airflow, and all was well - have been running it for many months now with no
overheating (typically runs at 120-130 F as measured by Gauge Pro).

Regards, Jim
