I performed an experiment: 1) removed the stock G3 DT power supply, 2) removed the (metal) finger guard from the DT's "clamshell" top (note: requires some mechanical skills), 3) removed the stock 45 cubic feet/min (CFM) fan from the power supply, and installed a 65 CFM fan and a (plastic) finger guard in the power supply (note: requires some mechanical and electronics skills), and 4) installed the "upgraded" power supply in the DT. What did this achieve: 5) removal of the (metal) finger guard from the DT's "clamshell" top allowed me to install standard profile SDRAM sticks in the DT's motherboard, while installation of the (plastic) finger guard inside the DT's power supply retained the protective function of the guard without altering the form factor of the supply, and 6) the "upgraded" power supply reduced the internal temperature of the DT by about 15 or so degrees F; still not as cool as an MT, however. The DT case can accommodate five drives: 1) the standard floppy drive (which is in a proprietary mount; upper right), 2) the standard CD-ROM drive (which is in a standard 7500-case sled; lower right), 3) the standard hard drive (which is in a standard 7500-case sled; bottom), 4) the optional Zip drive (which is in a standard 7500-case sled; lower left), and 5) the optional hard drive (which is in a standard 7500-case sled; upper left). A Rev. 2 (B) or Rev. 3 (C) motherboard can accommodate four drives using its onboard dual-bus EIDE controller. The cable to the standard hard drive is one-headed, however custom made two-headed cables are available, and have been sold on e-bone in the past (contact me off-List for details ... there are none there now). The floppy *could* be replaced with a 1" high hard drive, although the mounting won't be very elegant. The Zip can be replaced with a 1.6" high hard drive. The CD-ROM *could* be replaced with a 1.6" high hard drive, although the CD-ROM sled would have to be modified. There are lots of upgrade options for the G3 DT ... you have to decide just how far you're willing to go to max-out the beast. Peter. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
