Computing, IMHO, is not a proprietary function. It can
be, but it should not be - witness the availability of
drivers for 'third party' devices (that the
proprietary firms refuse to support) in the Open
Source world.
Various governments have waded into the debate, with
some openly supporting Open Source (Linux basically).
Does this mean that prop'y firms will cease to exist
at some point? No, but their profit profile will
change.
M$ has openly called Open Source a 'cancer', etc.
But when you're a monopoly, it's hard to accept any
opposition.
