You say that at startup, the keyboard/mouse don't work. Does the system still boot to the desktop. I ask, because I've seen numerous iMacs come in with this described symptom yet having no problems when I would try to boot them. It often turned out that the owner was using a MacAlly branded usb keyboard. As soon as we went back to the original Apple keyboard, the problems "mysteriously" vanished. Test this out by unplugging the keyboard and then plugging it back in, usually this would allow the bus to see it and functionality would be restored. Also try using a different keyboard with the computer. If it turns out to be the problem, get a different keyboard. Just about anything but a MacAlly usb keyboard. Logitech makes great keyboards, and they should function just fine (though any extra buttons will likely not be enabled).
