Ryan, Gregg and Mark,
Thank you all for your insight, wisdom,
expertise...and yes, the list can go on! And Ryan, I
appreciate you comment on why people waste space so
you did, by no means, bash this novice. 8-) The
reason for the 10 GB for OS 8.6 and OS 9.2.2 was for
apps, since Im still trying to figure out where apps
are to be placed using three OSs. So from what has
been written, I take it that all apps can be placed in
an Apps folder on a separate partition, no matter
which OS Im running. Therefore, heres the revised
partitioning:
- OS 10.2 - 7.9 GB - first on the drive
- OS 9.2.2 - 3 GB (system folder only)
- OS 8.6 - 3 GB (system folder only)
- 4th partition - 30 GB - Apps folder
- 5th partition - whatever is left
However, I still question the above (System folder
only) based on Mark's comment about "Classic Apps that
need to live in my 'Apps (Mac OS 9)' folder". How can
you tell if the App needs to stay with the particular
OS?
Oh great ones, you comments are truly welcomed!!!
TIA Van
Heres what they wrote:
Ryan: This is not a bash, please don't take it as
such, but I don't understand why people insist on
wasting 10GB for an old OS. All you need is 1 GB for
your system and preferences, do the same of 9.2.2
(which isn't necessary) and then the rest for your
Applications, Documents, etc. Also, yes you do need
that <8 GB drive for X on the front.
~~~~~~~~~~
Gregg: Unfortunately, for those of us with older
printers, 9.2.2 IS necessary. I've got an Epson 1520,
a perfectly FINE large format colour inkjet. I use
10.2 in everyday life. But because Epson has not
provided a printer driver that works with 10.2, I must
print all my oversize work to pdf, switch to classic,
and print from adobe reader. No other choice...
And there are two apps that I use regularly that
are not upgraded for OSX at all. Pinful, but it makes
9.2.2 necessary.
Now about partitioning, I agree with you.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ryan: I am not saying it isn't neccessary, I am
talking about the paritioning of it.
~~~~~~~~~~
Gregg: I saw the "...9.2.2(which isnt necessary)..."
and assumed you meant the OS.
~~~~~~~~~~
Mark: For the record I have 2.09GB set aside for OS
9.2.2. I only have this in case I have any Classic
Apps that need to live in my 'Applications (Mac OS 9)'
folder. I would have made it smaller but for the fact
space isn't really at a premium on this G3 :)

My original e-mail:
List,
Currently I'm running 8.6 on a beige G3 MT, 300
MHz, with 640M of RAM. I have a 80 GB IBM ready to
install and I plan on partitioning the drive for OS
10.2 (clean install, 7.9 GB), OS 9.2.2 (clean install,
10 GB), OS 8.6 (10 GB), and divide the rest into two
other partitions. Does this make sense? TIA, Van
