ps, per the original question, it's very, very unlikely that a bad
cd-r/w drive or any other kind of drive would hurt your machine.  it's
remotely possible of course if some of the interface pins have hard
shorted to a supply rail, particularly if it's the +12 rail but if
something like that happens i'd expect the drive in question to have
released some of that expensive smoke that's so hard to get back into
the chips once it comes out.  and silicon smoke really, really stinks,
it's hard to miss!  also you'd likely see cracks etc. on some of the
drives chips.  if in doubt find an old junker machine to try it on, but
you're probably, almost certainly ok.  you could of course only connect
the power and check all the interface pins with a meter but that would
be rather labor intensive and only worth while if it's a fairly fast
drive.  i've got a 4x burn, 8x read cdr drive i paid $200 for, if it
died i wouldn't spend much time worrying though, they've since gotten
allot cheaper and faster as things always do.
