To get OS X and 9 to cooperate using AppleTalk, you've got to enable 
"Enable File sharing clients over TCP/IP" in the File Sharing control 
panel of 9.

AppleTalk did not make a graceful transition to X, and the reason, I 
think, is because Apple wanted to replace it with Rendezvous.

In the worst case, you simply find the IP number on the Mac whose 
volumes you want to mount on your X box's desktop, and type that in to 
your connect to server dialogue box. Intuitive it ain't, but it works 
where the informal names used on the AppleTalk network fail.
