Many years ago I ran into a problem with some version of Word that caused 
problems if it was the first application loaded. The solution was to put 
an alias to some other program in the Startup Items folder, which kept 
Word from loading first and having the problem.

That was long before OS 9 -- maybe even before Office 98 -- but it might 
be worth investigating.
