I was looking at an old copy of Office recently that includes an extension meant to correct a problem that sounds like what you are describing. If you can't find it on the web let me know privately and I'll see if I can dig it out.

The solution was to put an alias to some other program in the Startup Items folder, which kept Word from loading first and having the problem.
