Hi,

I'm using a Tascam US-428 audio/midi interface with my beige under OS
9. While it is a great piece of equipment, and flawlessly provides
multi-channel audio in and out, there is one known problem with the
beige and this device. The built-in audio disappears as an output
option in the Sound control panel. I have no idea if this is a
driver clash specific to the US-428 or if it applies to any USB audio
device with the beige - it only occurs on the beige. And if your
built-ins are definitely kaput anyway, this won't bother you.

There is also a known problem with the beige sound card which had me
stumped for ages until I found an Apple tech note on it. I thought
my audio was broken too. Try removing the card and re-seating it
firmly into the socket, then hold down the CUDA reset switch for
thirty seconds, then zap the pram ten to fifteen times on startup
(hold down option-apple-P-R until you hear the startup chime the
requisite number of times). I know that seems excessive, but it can
make a difference. Apparently the PERCH card can appear to be in,
but is not seated properly, and if it has been removed or worked
loose, the system needs a kick in the pants to recognise it again.

If you are expecting sound from the internal speaker, it's worth
checking that its little cable is attached firmly to the appropriate
jumper pins on the front edge of the motherboard.

If you find the audio is broken for sure, and you just want
reasonably good quality audio for general listening, then go for the
Griffin iMic ($35 US). For something a little more pro, I would
recommend the Tascam US-428 or 224 (four and two channels of I/O
respectively) or the M-Audio Quattro or Duo (four and two). M-Audio
also make a relatively cheap and small device that can output
surround sound. There are also USB audio interfaces made by
Roland/Edirol, eMagic, Steinberg and others.

"God picks up the reed-flute world and blows. Each note is a need coming
through one of us, a passion, a longing-pain. Remember the lips where
the wind-breath originated, and let your note be clear. Don't try to end it.
BE YOUR NOTE." -Rumi, The Mathnawi
