My first reaction is that can't be the problem, as it's continued through
changing the hard disk and reinstalling everything. There're certainly no
CD icons on the desktop except when a real one is in the drive. 
However... I installed my OS both times by drag-copying a system (9.1) from
a bootable CD, then doing an upgrade (9.0-9.1) on that, which I thought
would tidy up any omitted bits from the drag. (I don't have an appropriate
full install.)  Any clues how to check this or find the orphaned reference?
