the better pre-press programs do let you set the dpi for the monitor and output. word should provide that, but doesn't. even assuming a dpi is a giant step though, in earlier days the size of text on screen had nothing to do with printout size. worst case now, even in word, you can turn on the programs rulers and lay a real ruler on the screen and get a good idea what printed size will be. text is actually supposed to be the same size regardless of monitor or printer, it's just that most programs don't have the trim controls. after all, you do set how many "points" text is, and that is a physical measurement, although again some font's aren't sized correctly. most better cad programs are also aware of actual screen dpi so that you can know what magnification you're working with, which is important to have a good feel for some things. ideally, there should be a system wide preference that tells all programs what the monitor scaling is.
