true. there are programs that will try to generate a vector image from a bit mapped image. i've never tried them, but i'm sure they have problems with many images, and the bit map resolution still has an effect on any derived vectors. for instance, short lines can only represent a limited number of angles in a bit mapped representation, there's a quantum effect imposed by the bit map format. then again, things like photographs are inherently in bit mapped form and it would be very, very hard to come up with acceptable vector representations for many real objects. sure, you can come up with a pretty snazzy looking vector drawing of a human body, but will it look like any real person or any one you know? eyes are bit map sensors, though there is evidence the brain derives vector diagrams from the data, but they also (before the vector conversion is done, as demonstrated by magnetic imaging of the brain while stimulated and electrode studies in animals) extract shapes and orientations before the individual elements are vectorized. human perception is tricky, and it's hard to represent in current technology in a way that's easy to use for generating output for others to perceive.
