My first guess (and it *is* just a guess) is a corrupted preference. 
Try trashing the finder preferences first. Next try trashing keyboard 
preferences. Ditto the USB preferences. (You know... another thought... 
Run RAM-o-meter on it and make sure that you didn't have a stick of RAM 
go wonky on you.  I seem to remember...)
