Can anyone tell me why Microsoft veered from DOS/Windows and OS/2
(developed in conjunction with IBM and one of the great operating systems
of all time) to Windows NT/2000/XP?

Sometimes you realize that it's costing more to keep the old baggage
that's weighing down your OS than it's worth. In the case of consumer
Windows and the classic Mac OS, both were rooted in a single user, single
tasking operating system. The memory model and everything were far from
optimal for stability on a computer handling more than one task at a time.

Microsoft chose to build their own "better than Unix" operating system,
which most recognize is instead vastly inferior to Unix. Apple finally
threw out Copeland, Pink, Taligent, Rhapsody, and other projects to build
on the firm foundation of BSD Unix. It's now the most widely used desktop
*nix on the market and getting raves from new users, Linux lovers, and
Windows converts.

Classic Mac users, on the other hand, often find it a bit harder to adapt
to all the changes. Think different.

Neither the classic Mac OS nor OS X has ever included support for
multisession CDs. This is an oversight Apple really should address. If
not them, perhaps Roxio will add it to the next edition of Toast....

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary
ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong
end of a telescope and that enables you to laugh at life's realities.
