Normally it is 
mail.provider.domain
or 
mailto.provider.domain
or 
smtp.provider.domain

mine is mail.t-online.de

which is a DNS address. There is of course a straight forward IP 
address for the server you should be connecting to- one for POP and one 
for SMTP - , and your provider - if you are lucky enuf to get someone 
knowlegable on the phone - should be able to give you that. Sometimes 
it connects faster. On the otherhand, providers over here are in the 
habit of changing this once in a while, or of rerouting for service 
reasons, in which case the specific IP address would not work. They do 
not recommend using the IP address.
