I had a similar experience to this and I was told that it's because yours (guessing here) has all of it's modules on one side of the stick. I've run 256 sticks in beige but there was one which showed 128 (but did work with that amount) but was really a 256mb. Hope that helps. Why two sided works and not one-sided? I know not. :-)
