I had a similar problem two years ago with an old Beige G3 with the OS X Beta CD,
I only booted from this CD, but didn't install anything, after that I couldn't
get the Mac to boot from the HD, PRAM zapping didn't work, only zapping it ten
times fixed it. I believe I also tried the CUDA reset, but even that didn't work.

Like Peter said if you have really strange problems with your Beige, OS X and
disappearing IDE busses, zapping the PRAM ten times fixes this, don't know why,
but it does work :-)
