>Should I go with a wireless router or just run the cable. It depends upon your situation and needs. Here's some things I'd consider:
- Speed. Copying between machines at 100Mbps is much nicer than 11Mbps. On the other hand, if you rarely copy large amounts of data between your machines, either wired or wireless will be way faster than your DSL. - Security. Even with WEP turned on, someone can gain access to your network, watch all the traffic between wireless nodes, and use your DSL. If you don't care, or if your nearest neighbors and roads are a long way from your house, this won't matter. - Interference. Some cordless phones use the same spectrum as 802.11b. If you have one of them, you'll have to fool with the phone and/or wireless setup to get them to peacefully coexist. If you don't have such a phone and never plan to get one, this won't matter either. - Cost. Wireless routers are slightly more expensive than their non-wireless equivalents, and you'll have to buy a wireless card for each of the machines you want on the network. Cat-5 is cheap. - Convenience. With wireless, you don't have to run cat-5 and have cat-5 laying around, and you don't have to have your machines near the end of a cable. Of course with just desktop machines, you probably will run the cable to them and never move them, but if you ever plan on getting a laptop, being able to have it on the network anywhere in your house is handy.
