I still opt for wired solutions when it comes to desktop (non-roving) machines, as 
they tend to provide faster network speeds and are cheap and easy enough to replace. 
The bulk of the cost tends to go to the cabling, then to the hub/switch, then to the 
individual cards. Moreover, one need not worry about signal degradation as much. Some 
friends of mine deployed Linksys WAPs and USB-connected wireless "network cards" and 
there was occasional loss of signal inspite of the WAP being located right next to 
them. 

Wireless is especially convenient for mobile systems, laptops in particular, in which 
you wouldn't need to be tied to a particular place just to be connected to a network. 
While the wired solution may involve some housework (after all, I doubt you'd want 
cables running around the place and tripping over them), it kinda stays there until 
you need to move around.
