Hello

I have been following this string ; starting with interest, but now
entering the realm of "what is the problem ?"

Forget the "theory" and get practical

If you buy the correct 256MB DIMM for your machine , the ASP will
indicate 256.
If it doesn't , then its not the correct RAM.

Your machine may operate , but not with 256 RAM.

Go to
OWC URL http://eshop.macsales.com/specials/XLR8YourMac.cfm ; and
scroll down to Mac Hot memory , Buys.
  which states:

  "256MB PC100 CL2 168 pin SDRam 2-2-2 w/Lifetime Warranty for all
PowerMac G3 Beige, G3 Blue & White, G4 'Yikes' PCI models only.
LifeTime Warranty! (OWC100SD256324) more info... $22.27 "

Buy it

The end
