1) If ever there were case designs with heat dissipation problems, the Cube and the 8500 would be near the top of the list. There are, nonetheless, 1 GHz upgrades for both and heat is not a frequently reported problem for those problems. (Drawing too much power for the Cube's power controller board was the undisputed king, there.)
2) The G4 is a more efficiently designed chip and produces less heat, cycle for cycle, than a G3 of the same speed. Significant operating temperature advances have been made since the G3s the B&W was designed for were released. 3) The fan in the B&W is variable-speed, based on readings from inside the case. 4) The 550 MHz limitation is exclusively a clocking issue. Macs that use processor daughtercards set the clock speed on the card, not the logic board. By hacking the card design, Sonnet, PowerLogix and (almost) XLR8 were able to run the processors up to 1 GHz. (Their next trick may be DP cards.) Both PowerLogix and Sonnet are working on ZIF module hacks to get around logic board clocking limitations.
