I don't even think usb cards need to be Mac specific, any generic card should work, if I'm not mistaken. I bought a usb/firewire combo card and it worked fine. I have cheap usb card $20 US at work in a 7500 and it works fine too. I don't recall what operating system you have. If it is 8 something, you might need to get the usb card enabler from the Apple website. I think 9.x doesn't need it but that might be wrong. In any case, you could try reinstalling the operating system. That might clear up the problem.
