I think it's worth it. The iPod is one cool gadget that has no equivalent (so far) for it's design, power, and quality. I bought my wife a 5GB model and we're amazed at all the new software that comes out for it ie.calendars, downloading driving directions, address book, etc. On top of that you have what it was meant for, to play most of your CD/MP3 collection. It's also very versatile as we were able to use the tape adapter from our old portable Discman to play the tunes straight out of my wife's car stereo/cassette player (with 10 hours of battery life we never need to worry about running out of tunes when driving to Ottawa). I was also able to plug in some cheap PC external speakers to the iPod's ear phone jack and now we have our DJ for dinner parties -- no more rushing to the stereo system to change CD's or worry about skipping. The extra software (that's free) allows you to download the weather forecast for cities you may be travelling to or directions to a place you need to get to or download the latest news to read on your travels or store your phone numbers/addresses or your schedule for the day. It almost replaces the Palm BUT you can't change info on the fly you'll need to do all the changes on the computer first -- only con so far. Yes there are other portable players out there but how do they compare with the iPod? You usually pay for quality and the iPod is worth it.
