FWIW, here's how it worked: The drive won't work with 9.0.4 (Yamaha confirmed this). Last night I downloaded 9.1, but there must have been an error because I can't open the .smi. So, using TomeViewer I found the Apple CD/DVD driver from 8.6, swapped it in the extensions folder for the one loaded with 9.0.4, rebooted, and now everything works great :-)
