This seems odd. The application (which one?) may need to see the cam, but it doesn't have to show up on the HD, does it? That should likely only apply to smart media.
The app should have a "capture" option, as well as (hopefully) device control. Essentially you enable capture and either: 1. hit play on the cam (in vcr mode) if you don't have device control; or 2. hit record in the app with device control enabled. Are the app's Help Files useful?
