It works with (most?) pci macs, with varying degrees of ease- early
versions want to talk through the modem port!  It's for setting the
boot options and such, but I've had it bring back a monitor lost
during a Darwin install (why? no idea!).  I've found the most
information about it at a NetBSD site:
