Funny thing ram is. I had the same problem with having to restart the Mac. I thought, seeing I was in 9 often enough and nothing happened that it could not be the ram and had to be something with X. Well after exhausting all my excuses I finally got down to the ram and low and behold my restart problems were associated to one bad ram Dimm.
