I too understand your fears of ebay - but all my experiences have been
good, with helpful people. I'm sure plenty of people on this list would
be happy to help and advise if you saw a machine you were interested in.

My G3 (now a second or third machine) is a Beige 300 with CD and 100Mb
internal Zip, both of which have seen hard use and given no trouble. I
also have an external SCSI CD/R and SCSI scanner - both of which work
fine and can now be picked up cheap on eBay and elsewhere. I'm running
OS X .2.3 with only 224Mb memory! I've put a USB card in and a Firewire
card. I've swapped the HD to a 40gig (easy job) but really need more
memory. I have an Airport network at home, but have this machine
ethernet cabled to the AP base station, which connects to the cable
modem.
The machine works just fine. It doesn't look pretty, but it's a really
adaptable machine. Personally, I'd look out for a higher spec machine,
a bigger monitor (mine's the 17" CRT that came with it) at a lower
price. If you are in a hurry or not too fussy about price and spec, buy
it and tinker.
Have fun!
Andrew
