G'day from Oz once again (finally) I've been off air 5 days fixing bloody Nortons damage, and tracking down the problem.
This problem has caused a bit of a stir. TAKE NOTE. I --strongly-- advise against using NU 7 on a Jaguar partition. I've installed Jag on..... my G3 desktop (500 G4 Zif from OWC clocked at 533, 768 meg, 8 Gig, 31 Gig partitions, radeon 7000 for mac) a neighbors 400 320 meg DV iMac (4 meg, 4 meg partitions) I then ran disk first aid on each, and repair permissions, then booted into 9.2.2. with Nortons installed. On exiting, the Nortons file backup and disk check utility reports the same error on both macs for the Jag partitions. Fixing it with Disk Doctor totally destroys Jag on both. Choosing a re-install makes things worse. You have to re-format. You can't just trash (at least, I couldn't). Some of my data disappeared (such as a weeks worth of eMail) Running speed disk on a new install of Jag on the iMac was fine, but I won't test it on my own mac. This also happens on my G3 with my original 233 processor and original 192 meg ram, no cards of any sort. My original posted problem seems to be due to the fact I have an intermittent hardware freeze, and also that the install disks have to be scrupulously clean, both on my original Apple CD, and my LITE-ON burner. I had them polished. The Radeon 7000 may also need a second firmware update burn after all this. Mine did, otherwise 9.2.2 freezes. If you install Jag on the same partition as 9, then you may have real problems after running Nortons. Other problems...... 1... Just dragging a 9.2.2 backup back onto a fresh System 9 partition may not work. Whatever Jag 2.3 does to 9.2.2 from Classic, it does not copy. Using the version of the Control Panel Disk Startup (9.2.4) included on the original Jag install disk does not allow booting into the Jag X.2.3 install. Using the Version of Disk Startup (9.2.5) from a Jag X.2.3 update in a dragged-in copy of 9.2.2 only gives a menu line of garbage. You cannot choose a Jag startup using the Option key on boot on my G3, but the iMac was fine. The only way of fixing it was a re-install of Jag, install the X.2.3 update, then run Classic BEFORE going anywhere near 9.2.2. Otherwise you can't get back into Jag. Make sure any copy of Startup Disk 9.2.5 is removed first. Anybody know an easier way? Disk Startup needs some work. 2... After the X.2.3 update, you may not be able to access your modem. You can install and choose any modem script you like, but they simply don't address either a built in modem (on the iMac), or the modem port (G3). The only way to fix it is to install the X.2.3 update with the correct modem selected, an active phone line, and the internet details filled in. The modem dials out during the update, and everything is fine after that (at least on my G3, haven't done the iMac). Don't know yet if a X.2.3 updater on top of an existing x.2.3 will do the same. Do Apple use this little feature to get your details?? I've installed X.2.3 on the iMac, & am going to re-update with the phone line connected, but as soon as it logs in, will pull the line. Stuff 'em, they're not entitled to anything I don't want them to have. I have ALWAYS installed with the line off with everything. Before I try it, does anyone have a work-around I can try? I found the hardware install very easy, but I've encountered a few problems with X that simply should not occur. Probably my fault, as I like to stuff around with things. My posted problems with user backgrounds, and disappearing files, has proved re-producible, but. In the 350 emails I got today (some backlog), I noticed a discussion on an 8 meg drive causing problems. I had a similar problem on my external drive partitions, and finally formatted each from Jag FireWire (3rd party and usb format from 9.2.2 no good). No worries after that.
