G'day from Oz all. The last five weeks playing with Jaguar and upgrades have been interesting to say the least. Someone up there doesn't like me. Probably a recently deceased Bill Gates admirer. Come to think of it, that might mean more of a case of 'Down' there. If we're talking about a Billy admirer, perhaps old Nick himself stepped in. Some bastard has for sure.
Ah well, I've always thanked the old bloke upstairs for sending Apples & Macs my way, so better not run away now. After my post last night, I restarted in 9.2.2 to try out something. I've found a better way to boot into 9.2.x. (some of you probably know this, but I bloody didn't) Stamp the pram... In Jag, leave your bootup disk set as Jaguar (in System preferences), and re-boot holding down the Option key. You should boot into 9.2.x. Importantly, to ensure this for a new install, first select Jaguar as your Startup Disk, and re-boot. This stamps the pram as Jag. Then re-boot with the option key. If you install a new jag after zapping the pram, and just select 9.2.x as your startup, and re-boot, you end up back in Jag. To first stamp the pram, for some weird reason you have to set Jag first, re-boot, then swap over. This is probably the reason why the 9.2.2 Startup Disk control panel don't work! The above method means you never have to set your startup disk to 9.2.x. When you want Jag, don't hold down any keys. If you don't already know, normally, on later macs, the option key allows a selection of systems as you boot. I think this applies to all macs with built in usb. They don't have this problem. Whatever you do, don't zap the pram. After booting into 9.2.x, I noticed my monitor was plugged into the original mac video. I'd swapped them so often I hadn't seen it. I shut down, plugged into the Radeon card, and re-booted. I got the desktop, and then froze. Swapped again, re-installed the Radeon drivers, burnt the card upgrade again (though it happened so fast I think the old burn had stuck, and was bypassed). Still froze. Like an idiot, I tried zapping the pram. Once that little sucker is zapped, kiss goodby to Jaguar access. This is such an incredibly stupid move by Apple that it beggars belief. Doesn't matter if you've set up everything as I outlined yesterday, the latest Disk Startup running in 9.2.2 only recognizes previously set Pram, and doesn't burn new settings. You can only initially set the pram from Jaguar, hence the required step outlined above in Stamp the pram... So, you re-install Jag. I had the Radeon running perfectly under 9.2.2. and the only thing different is that damn Classic startup installing stuff. Now, every mac savvy owner knows you should zap the pram if things start going haywire. Apple recommend it. Yet, as soon as you do, on a non-usb mac, you have to re-install Jaguar to get a blessed system. Who on earth tested this latest build on non-usb macs. They're pretty slack. We badly need a Disk Startup that will re-burn the pram. As well, the Radeon card issue needs addressing. I believe this fault lies with Apple as well. How do we ask them????? If you have a Radeon 7000 for mac, and Jag installed, but want to boot into 9.2.x, leave the card in, Shut Down, and re-boot with the monitor plugged into the Apple video socket. Naturally, power OFF before unplugging, re-plugging. The whole process is.... ::: Install Jag. If you want, minimize the system from Customize (I don't install languages, non-Epson printers, Asian fonts) :: If re-installing, always choose the option to save everything. If anything you need has a size listed on the right, re-install it. If it's been partially through an install, and crashed, some of these may show as 0. All depends on how far the installer gets. ::: Once X.2 is installed, drag your modem script to the 'Library:Modem Scripts' folder. If you're re-installing, it will be in the modem scripts folder under Previous Systems. ::: Log out, and back in. Select your modem script under the Network preferences. If you don't re-log, your script won't be seen. ::: Locate and move/copy any other special folders and screen savers you have in Previous Systems. For ex. I have a separate desktop pictures folder, a User Pictures folder (that holds two 48x48 pixel pictures for log-ins), Marine Aquarium screen saver. None of these get automatically moved to the new install. ::: Make sure every detail is filled out for Internet and Network in System preferences. On a new install, this is essential. A re-install seems to find that you have logged on ok before (does that mean Apple have what they wanted?) ::: Make sure your modem is turned on and connected, and the phone line active. ::: Run the updater. ::: Once re-booted, run Classic, and allow it to install it's stuff if it hasn't already. ::: Set the Startup Disk to Jaguar, and re-boot. ::: Re-boot with the option key down (and hope like hell 9.2.x comes up). BUT, if you have a Radeon 7000 Card, choose Shut down, pull the power, re-locate the monitor lead, re-boot with Option. ::: From 9.2.x, re-boot with no keys, and (fingers crossed), set Jaguar up as you want. Hopefully, your modem will work. Is there anywhere we can keep a list like this to refer people to, that can be updated? Anybody got any better ways? An extra. If you download Marine Aquarium (which is fantastic with the Radeon), the privileges flags for the App (the fish), and the screen saver (folder) are set to something like Owner Santa (me), access Read & Write, & Group is probably Wheel No access. Bloody useless for multiple users. Reset the Group to Staff (me) Read & Write, then the Owner to System. This must be done before you install and first select the screen saver. If too late, remove them to the desktop, re-boot, then re-flag and move them back. Regards Santa (made on a Mac finally running Jaguar) -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
