Ok, starting from that point after video capture, what is the following procedure (software details, etc.)? I am a pro capturing video on my 8500, I do agree that the quality is pretty bad to begin with, but I am pretty new to my G3, and I don't have the tools I need specially cause I don't the basic AV card here. And last, but not least, I want to do this the most economical way possible [don't we all want that? ;)]
Lil --- end of quote --- Ok. If you put it a Firewire card you can capture video in DV format if you have the outbord equipment to do it. There are several options out there, the Hollywood Video Bridge by Dazzle is just one. They go for about $250. I went for a digital camcorder for $500, the Canon ZR 40, which can take analog video from any source, and send it to the computer by firewire. So its a video bridge and a fine didital camcorder at the same time, for me a very good deal and the key to getting this all working. There is also a new item that captures analog video, compresses it for dvd or vcd (I think) and ships it to the computer via usb. This should work ok and the advantage is you don't need firewire and the compression is done outboard (I think in real itme) by specialized hardware. This should save computer time. But the thing costs the same as a video bridge. There are also some inexpensive usb items that take analog video and send out digital video on the usb bus. But the quality is lousy..I gave mine away. The software for uploading and editing dv video is iMove or the professional (read complex and expensive) programs: Final Cut or Adobe Premiere, or a few shareware programs can do it too. But iMovie is free and capable and wonderful. IMovie then exports the edited (and titled if you like) video to Titanium Toast which burns your vcd. Cool and really very simple. If you want to go the next step to burning dvds, you'll need a DVD burner. The best route here is an internal Superdrive Pioneer DVR-104), which replaces your cd rom in the G3. This costs abut $250. If you have osX and upgrade your computer to a G4 (about $200) you can use iDVD which only works with an internal Superdrive. It's wonderful and you get great disks with excellent video. It's easy to find DVD-r disks for about $1 now. You can also use them for 4.7 gig backups, almost worth the price of admission right there. I've been writing a bunch aobut this kind of thing on this list but I'm happy to do it. I struggled for a lot of months trying to find the most economical and efficient way to get my G3 Beige minitower to do video. Reading messages on this list helped me a lot so I'm happy to pass it on. Rich -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
