try trashing the finder preferences, that solves a multitude of 
problems.  if that doesn't work, try making the desktop files visible 
and trashing them, and then restarting.  this forces the mac to make 
fresh files from scratch.  sometimes the desktop files become too 
corrupted for rebuilding to fix them, apple techs do this sometimes.
