i usually use "file buddy" although there are other utilities.  there 
are 2 files, "desktop db" and "desktop df", move them both to the 
trash, you won't be able to empty them from the trash until you reboot 
because the system will still be using them until you reboot.  each 
partition will have it's own desktop files.  also, as someone else 
suggested check the shutdown and startup items.  i also like to look in 
the extensions and control panels folders as not everything actually 
shows up in the extension manager.  you may also have other preferences 
that might be involved.  i assume you're not running any automatic 
virus or disk saving software?  those frequently cause problems and 
rarely help anything.  you may also have a damaged system, sometimes 
reinstalling the os can do wonders but it's best to try the easier 
possibilities first.
