Hey Tina,

I have had a variety of Macs and I have mostly found upgrading to be just
delaying the inevitable because of compatibility issues of one kind or
another. The iMac on the other hand is designed for OSX and has a superdrive
etc. It is also a reasonable price coming as it does with a flat screen.

My problem with the iMac is expandability and performance. I have decided
that when I go for my new Mac I will buy the 1GHz G4. I can add
memory/drives etc as and when I need them - lots of space. Of course there's
the added expense of a display to consider also, making the iMac look
awfully attractive.

When I tried out the iMac in the store it seemed very slow bringing up the
apps. I think the dual processor arrangement in the G4s is a requirement for
a reasonable level of performance. Right now I have an older G4 with twin
500MHz processors. I wouldn't say it screams although in my opinion it
should. I also have 768MB RAM.

I really like the appearance of the iMac but I will spend the extra money
for the faster G4 when the time comes unless Apple goes ahead with Intel
technology instead of Motorola to up the ante in performance.

That's my two cents worth - go run them through their paces at the store if
you can. Whatever you choose it's an expensive decision when you consider
that you can build a high-performance PC for about $600. I like Apple so I
pay the premium like the rest of us. They seem to be ahead on media
management and publishing not to mention cool looking stuff!

John

Subject: G3 Blue & white 350MHz/64MB RAM upgrade vs. IMac 800MHz

I have a G3 Blue & White 350MHz/64RAM amd 6.0 GB hard drive that I am
contemplating upgrading OR am considering buying the new IMac with a 17
inch flat screen and 800MHz processor.

Any advice which way to go? I do not know a whole lot about the new
IMac.

TIA,

Tina
