Brilliant! Thanks a million, Tina.
I was able to open and save the monster OE Message files in BBEdit
(they wouldn't open in OE). There are huge swaths of gibberish
characters in the two BBEdit files, but at least I can Search for
important names and addresses in the formerly lost emails.

The two files are, as I said, huge: does anyone know a quick and easy
way to edit out the gibberish (probably tens of thousands of
characters, in a document of several hundred thousand characters).
Any expertise here much appreciated.

In the meantime, I've gone back to using Eudora (now 5.2, the last
time I used it every day was version 4.x). It'll take some
"retraining", but I have already started backing up the individual
message folders it makes (a GREAT feature for me).

Are there any negatives to Stuffing the Eudora message folders for
backup purposes? Can they get corrupted? It's a nice way to back them
up, as a couple of folders were reduced 7-fold (from 28MB to 4MB).

Thanks again.

Chris

P.S. On a side note, I recovered a 3rd problematic OE Message
document using BBEdit, then saved that new document in Word 98: the
saved document went from 66MB in BBEdit to 161MB in Word 98 (and took
almost 3 minutes to save on a G4/550 with 1GB of RAM, 80MB dedicated
to Word 98).

I think I'll leave the documents in BBEdit.
