I've had a scanners (an Agfa and a Polaroid, and come to think of it maybe that
ancient Nikon I got on Ebay) that were very fussy about which scsi ID they were
on.   In one case, I think it was a UMax on a 68k Mac, the thing had to be first
on the external chain and unit 1.  

Have you tried changing the ID and the physical position in the chain?
