That's it in a nutshell, Rich.

I would add that for G3's that don't give a menu when booting with the 
Option key down (they just boot straight into 9), I think open firmware 
settings are stored in Pram, that's why zapping stuffs the Jag boot 
parameters.

The later models (iMac etc) show a horrible looking brief Boot System 
menu when Option/booting. Once you know about the System Disk panel for 
recovering Jag, our old clunkers are actually easier. It's just that we 
have to boot into 9 first after a zap. The later ones probably also 
store boot parameters in Pram, but the firmware has the built in System 
selector.

I suspect the Boot System menu display models are all built in usb ones.
